Is Zoom Safe?

In a nutshell, yes, Zoom is safe.

In just a few months, Zoom went from a niche video conferencing tool to the main way hundreds of millions of people connect with the outside world. When a company grows that quickly, there are gonna be some bumps.

Fortunately for us, Zoom is run by a good team, and when they learned of the recent security flaws, they acknowledged and fixed them. Bravo Zoom.

Re: the password hacking, it was not Zoom that was hacked (though Zoom is being targeted). Basically, the bad guys (those guys we keep warning you about that want to steal your passwords!) took a list from an old password hacking incident and used those passwords to try to login to your Zoom accounts. Annnnnndd since so many of us use the same password for all of our accounts, many of those password attacks worked. Doh!

Here's what you need to do now.

Step 1

Change your Zoom password.

"Wait, a Zoom password? I don't think I even have one of those!" (I'm looking at you, Deborah!).

Many of you likely don't have a Zoom account but are instead using the free version of Zoom. If that's you, you don't need to do anything (but you should keep reading!). For everyone else, change your Zoom password right away.

Step 2

Use a password manager like Dashlane, 1Password, or iCloud Keychain. We know creating and updating passwords can be tedious, but that's where a password manager comes in! Using a password manager is easy and it keeps you safe. Sound daunting? See Step 3.
